Wine Without Borders

Crown Block Vineyard

Albariño
2023

No wine better captures the essence of the coast than albariño. The varietal is even known to be a little “salty,” – literally! Crown Block is located about thirty miles from the coast, just as Portugal’s famous albariño vineyards. The site benefits from constant Pacific breezes and cooling fog that linger at the base. Genea detected that “ocean, salty wind on the finish” that is so typical of albariño. But let’s not just skip right to the end! Genea and Kailyn found delightful aromas of green Anjou pear, with Julian finding pomelo, and Shalae enjoying a hint of thyme. The team marveled at how the mouthfeel is so soft and rich, it’s almost oily! This luxurious mouthfeel is a playful counterpoint to the wine’s citrusy, refreshing flavors, which Darcie giddily noted seemed reminiscent of a “sour apple Jolly Rancher.”

Chardonnay
2022

Take a cue from your favorite canine, and make sure to enjoy a ‘sniff’ or two of the 2022 before sipping! Kailyn loved the oodles of butterscotch and nutmeg, pointing to the wine’s gentle oak influence, with Mark finding juicy mango and lemongrass. Shalae seconded the lemongrass note, and on the palate, noted “toasted almond.” Julian and Genea emphasized a beautiful impression of hazelnut both on the nose and palate. The 2022 is extremely soft and thick, but balanced with a vibrant acidity that brings the wine to life. It’s balance of oak is achieved from useing “once used barrels-” which imparts mellow, integrated spicebox character without the intensity of new oak.

Rosé of Malbec
2023

Our watermelon rosé is back! Julian noted years ago that our small block of malbec creates rosé with a consistent watermelon character, and 2023 could be a textbook year. Take a look in our winemaker’s notebook, and you’ll see that “watermelon” is the first note he wrote down. Julian also found orange blossom, which could be influenced by Darcie’s twenty five year old orange tree, which stands only a few feet from the vines. Genea, Darcie and Kailyn loved the aromas and flavors of strawberry laced through the entire tasting experience, all the way to the finish. Kailyn also seconded Shalae’s notes of “pink grapefruit,” and her comment that this wine “smells like spring.”

Crown Block

Merlot
2021

This release celebrates the renaissance of our original vineyard block and release: Crown Block Merlot. Darcie noted that the 2021 undeniably follows in the footsteps of our previous merlots, with opulent cherry flavors and aromas. Different members of our team found different manifestations of this: Genea found a “smokey black cherry,” while Kailyn leaned toward sour cherry. Shalae found “cherry wood,” (if that counts!) Julian also called attention to the aromas of blueberry and fig, and flavors of mocha on the palate. Kailyn thought it reminded her of clove and roasted oolong on the finish. Velvety, almost “fuzzy” tannins and a creamy body complement the bright acidity that laces through each sip.

Petit Verdot 2021

Our Petit Verdot has won Best of Class three years in a row, with this vintage winning its category at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of North American Wines in the world. This vintage is extremely aromatic, redolent of blackberry, star anise, cedar and lilac. These floral notes are joined by subtle spice box characteristics from 21 months in 100% French oak barrels. On the palate, the blackberry deepens to mulberry and black currant, the incense character intensifies, and the suggestion of star anise becomes undeniable. (This note was almost unanimous for our team of tasters.) You would think that a wine with such tannic content would bristle, but the 2021 passes over your palate like silk, with grippy but soft tannins. Concentrated, it will cellar gorgeously through 2034.

Clone 337

Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

The name “Clone 337” is full of mystery. What exactly do those numbers mean? To vintners, 337 foretells an early ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, ideal for cooler sites. 337 is often the first Cabernet Sauvignon block we harvest, creating an “Old World” Cabernet Sauvignon that is lighter on its feet, and perfect for the spring. The 2021 had us all thinking of pie: Darcie found “strawberry rhubarb pie,” while Genea and Kailyn veered “cherry.” Kailyn especially was fond of a toasted almond and pie crust note, pointing to the delicate marriage of barrel and fruit tannins. More than half the team independently found notes of “tobacco leaf,” pointing to the 2021’s nuanced tannic character. Full bodied and bright, the 2021 will continue to cellar beautifully through 2034.

DOUBLE GOLD: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2023

The nose of the 2022 Triska Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is unapologetically ready to party. Vibrant bursts of pomelo, candied lime, & Meyer lemon are followed by touches of lemongrass, dill, and sliced jalapeño.  On the palate the fruit sings: ripe pineapple, lychee, and dragonfruit give off this epic white gummy bear character that brings me back to digging through the candy section at the movie theater.  The palate is full yet precise and only sits as long as it needs to before leaving you drooling for another sip.

GOLD: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2023

The aromatics of the 2021 NOIR is loaded with a very “Pinot Noir-ish” expression of red fruit, notably cherry, cranberry, and black raspberry, with a fun undertone of rhubarb and those cinnamon sugar graham crackers that we eat as kids. On the palate, cherry leads the charge, followed by a more savory cranberry sauce steeped with hibiscus, dried rose hip, and Italian oregano. The tannins have a good flex on them once the fruit passes through the mid palate and into a mocha finish, balanced by the bright acidity we know and love from a Pinot Noir.

  • DOUBLE GOLD: Livermore Valley Uncorked 2022
  • GOLD: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2023

The 2019 Stone Patch Cabernet Franc keeps evolving as it sits in your glass.  Give it a swirl at first and you’ll find opulent red fruit, but after about 10 minutes, it reveals a darker fruit character, along with fresh cedar, Thai basil, rosemary, and black pepper. This wine makes you work to find the Cab Franc pyrazine quality so obvious on other examples of the varietal. On the palate, flavors of blueberry, black tea, sage, and rose petal dance on my tongue while the tannins settle on the palate gracefully, allowing one final pop of bright red fruit that lingers through the finish.

Coming soon

The inaugural vintage of the 2020 West Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is another fantastic showcase of the beauty of Clone 30. This Cab displays darker fruit aromatics than last releases’ Clone 337,  while still lively and fresh. It smells like what I wished the boysenberry syrup at IHOP tasted like. West Hill is redolent of plum, blueberry, sweet rosemary, and a very subtle hint of molasses, all framed by toasted barrel essence. And the palate is simply all-class. The texture makes me think of that one leather jacket that has taken a decade to loosen up, but fits JUST RIGHT. Blackberry, black currant, roasted poblano, and vanilla bean husk sneak onto your tongue and explode on the mid palate, coating your entire mouth. I have really come to love the plush nature of Clone 30 tannins, and I believe this wine could trick anyone into thinking they were drinking a $95 bottle of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.
